Herbal Teas to Boost Your Libido
July 31st, 2013

Traditional herbs have always been celebrated for their benefits in fighting erectile dysfunction, which is why they are added in most male enhancement pills. But not all pills address low libido or sex drive, too. But don’t fret if you’re looking for a solution to less-than-optimal desire for lovemaking – there are herbal teas you can create (or purchase from health stores) to help boost your libido.

One herb for this purpose is American ginseng. There are two varieties of ginseng helpful for low libido: Chinese and American ginseng. The latter is found in animal studies to better improve sex drive through altering the effect of dopamine on the brain. Both varieties, however, were shown in a study to both enhancer sexual response and desire in animals.

There’s also maca, which is thought to be beneficial through normalizing sex hormone levels. After using 2,000 milligrams of maca, participants in a study saw significant libido increase, better sexual function, and more frequent sexual activity. Additionally, maca is seen to increase male fertility. It has, in fact, been called “nature’s Viagra,” taking two months to bring concrete benefits in the research.

Horny goat weed, also known as epidemium grandiflorum, is deemed beneficial for the libido of both men and women. Used in traditional Chinese medicine, horny goat weed contains Icariin, which is considered helpful in stimulating blood flow and pressure to your penis and the clitoris of women.

Here’s the mechanism of action: when exposed to an enzyme that controls blood flow to the penis and results in an erection, horny goat weed provided the most noteworthy effect of the said enzyme. Scientists were able to create a Viagra-like formulation when they modified the active ingredient from the extract.

You can purchase dried horny goat weed and brew the tea on your own. Drink two cups per day (a handful of dried leaves steeped in about four cups of water for 15 minutes) and see effects in a few days.

Remember that no matter what the effectiveness of these herbs are, it is best to consult your doctor if you’re taking medications for a certain condition. This is to know the potential effects or interaction of the herbs with your prescription drugs.
